Concord Imaging features the GE Ultramark 9 Ultrasound system. This top-of–the-line imager obtains amazingly clear images of the body using high frequency sound waves.

What Is an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound as it is commonly referred to is also known by many other names; ultrasound scanning, sonography, and ultrasound imaging are some to name a few. Any of those names refer to the same process that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Because ultrasound images are captured in real time, they are able to show blood flowing through the blood vessels, as well as the movement of the body's organs and its structure.

Ultrasound imaging is an important tool for physicians to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. It can be used to diagnosis symptoms such as pain, swelling, infection and can also be very valuable in diagnosing blood clots and narrowing of the arteries.

Ultrasound is also helpful in guiding needle biopsies of the breast, thyroid, and other areas during procedures to extract cells from abnormal or questionable areas, which then are sent for further testing.

What Will I Experience During My Ultrasound?

You will be positioned on a table in the examination room and the technician will apply some gel to your skin on the area being examined. After the gel is applied the technician will use a transducer to press against the area and move it across the entire area until they can capture the desired images. You will feel pressure from the transducer moving across your skin and possibly discomfort if the technician is examining a particularly tender area but it should not be painful.
